The best way to prevent children from getting hurt is to keep them out of unsafe places. Blocking access to kitchen, basement and bathroom doorways can help prevent toddlers from swallowing poisons or from falling down stairs.

Note: never put a barrier on a door that your child might use as an emergency exit

Open windows are very dangerous, especially in the summer. A fall from an open window can cause broken bones, a skull fracture and even death.

A screen will protect your child
from falling out the window.

False. A screen can pop out of its frame if a child leans on it. Falls out of windows happen more often in the spring and summer when windows are left open. Windows should be locked so they cannot be opened more than 10 cm (4 in.) wide. Children can fit through spaces as small as 12 cm (5 inches) wide.
