Choosing the right safety gate...

The type of gate you choose will depend on where you want to use it. Gate heights can range from 60 cm (24 in) to 78 cm (31.5 in). Some gates have plastic mesh holes, while others have vertical rails or slats. As well, a taller gate with vertical slats will resist climbing better than a shorter, plastic mesh gate. At the top of the stairs, you will need a gate that bolts into the wall on both sides to prevent falls. Pressure-mounted or swing gates (bolted to the wall on one side only) are safe, convenient choices for the bottom of stairs or between rooms.

Note: you should stop using a gate when your child reaches two years of age, or his/her chin is level with the top of the gate.
